What The Commentary Says About The Proverbs 31 Woman

Matthew Henry’s Concise Commentary

Commentary on Proverbs 31:10-31

This is the description of a virtuous woman of those days, but the general outlines equally suit every age and nation. She is very careful to recommend herself to her husband's esteem and affection, to know his mind, and is willing that he rule over her.

1. She can be trusted, and he will leave such a wife to manage for him. He is happy in her. And she makes it her constant business to do him good.

 2. She is one that takes pains in her duties, and takes pleasure in them. She is careful to fill up time, that none be lost. She rises early. She applies herself to the business proper for her, to women's business. She does what she does, with all her power, and trifles not.

3. She makes what she does turn to good account by prudent management. Many undo themselves by buying, without considering whether they can afford it. She provides well for her house. She lays up for hereafter.

4. She looks well to the ways of her household, that she may oblige all to do their duty to God and one another, as well as to her.

5. She is intent upon giving as upon getting, and does it freely and cheerfully.

6. She is discreet and obliging; every word she says, shows she governs herself by the rules of wisdom. She not only takes prudent measures herself, but gives prudent advice to others. The law of love and kindness is written in the heart, and shows itself in the tongue. Her heart is full of another world, even when her hands are most busy about this world.

7. Above all, she fears the Lord. Beauty recommends none to God, nor is it any proof of wisdom and goodness, but it has deceived many a man who made his choice of a wife by it. But the fear of God reigning in the heart, is the beauty of the soul; it lasts for ever.

8. She has firmness to bear up under crosses and disappointments. She shall reflect with comfort when she comes to be old, that she was not idle or useless when young. She shall rejoice in a world to come. She is a great blessing to her relations. If the fruit be good, the tree must have our good word. But she leaves it to her own works to praise her. Every one ought to desire this honour that cometh from God; and according to this standard we all ought to regulate our judgments. This description let all women daily study, who desire to be truly beloved and respected, useful and honourable. This passage is to be applied to individuals, but may it not also be applied to the church of God, which is described as a virtuous spouse? God by his grace has formed from among sinful men a church of true believers, to possess all the excellences here described.

Exploring The Proverbs Chapter 31 Woman

Proverbs 31:10-30

10.  A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies.

11.  Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value.

12.  She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life.

13. She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands.

14. She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from afar.

15. She gets up while it is still night; she provides food for her family and portions for her female servants.

16. She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.

17. She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks.

18. She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night.

19. In her hand she holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers.

20. She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy.

21. When it snows, she has no fear for her household; for all of them are clothed in scarlet.

22. She makes coverings for her bed; she is clothed in fine linen and purple.

23. Her husband is respected at the city gate, where he takes his seat among the elders of the land.

24. She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies the merchants with sashes.

25. She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.

26.  She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.

27. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.

28. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her:

29. “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.”

30. Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.

HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH STRESS?

What is the definition of STRESS?

Definition of STRESS

From Merriam Webster:

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/stress

1: constraining force or influence: as
a : a force exerted when one body or body part presses on, pulls on, pushes against, or tends to compress or twist another body or body part; especially : the intensity of this mutual force commonly expressed in pounds per square inch
b : the deformation caused in a body by such a force
c : a physical, chemical, or emotional factor that causes bodily or mental tension and may be a factor in disease causation
d : a state resulting from a stress; especially : one of bodily or mental tension resulting from factors that tend to alter an existent equilibrium <job-related stress>

I've been trying to figure out ways to deal with stress.  We have recently lost our business due to the economy.  It took many months before my husband could find a job.  We are soo thankful that he has a new job, but now we are trying to adjust to making half the amount of money that we did before.

My husband has been dealing with some incredibly bad pain in his back from an L5 fracture & slip.  After going to a neuro surgeon he was told that surgery is not a good option as it's only a 50/50 chance that it would even help.  Each day is a struggle for him, but he continues to support our family with this new job which requires him to be on his feet around 8 hours each day.

I've been trying to learn to live with tinnitus.  After being tested by an audiologist, I found that I'm hearing between 750 to 1,000 decibals of my own internal noise.  It has truly been incredibly difficult to concentrate with such noise.  I went through months of not sleeping & had to have noise all around me to just try to sleep.  Whenever it is very quiet the sound is insanely loud.  Thankfully medication has helped me to get some sleep at night.  Something that I was soo great at before was concentration.  This has now become a source of great stress in my life.  The things I use to love to do so much, like writing cards & scrapbooking are super difficult right now.

So how do I deal with stress you ask?  I'm still learning every single day.  Here are some of things that have helped me:

1)  Remember FAITH:  F-antastic A-dventure I-n T-rusting H-im
My FAITH in Jesus is the thing that's getting me through this difficult time in life.  I start my day out by reading one chapter in the Bible.  I then read two devotionals.  My favorite devotional is Dayspring.  I've been soo blessed by reading devotions that so many women are writing.  My heart SMILES :) because on my most difficult days God speaks through the devotions and gives me just what I need to get through the day.

2)  Remember to FROG:  F-ully R-ely O-n G-od
An AMAZING boy named ^^ANGEL JACOB^^ taught me the meaning of FROG.  He was one of tripletts that passed away from cancer.  He had the most beautiful heart & the most brilliant bright blue eyes I've ever seen.  His picture is on my blog to the left.  He loved sharing with others :)  He left footprints on my heart 4-EVER <3

3)  Here are some quotes that help me by Corrie Ten Boom:
Any concern too small to be turned into a prayer is too small to be made into a burden.
Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.
The first step on the way to victory is to recognize the enemy.
Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow. It empties today of its strength.
Worry is a cycle of inefficient thoughts whirling around a center of fear.

 4)  PRAY - PRAY - PRAY
I find myself praying all day long.  One thing that I've learned is that Jesus needs to be my very Best Friend.  I am learning to take the fear, stress, & anxiety that surround me to Him in prayer.

5)  Bible Verses That Help So Much:

Hebrews 11:1 - Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Psalm 27:1 -  The LORD is my light and my salvation whom shall I fear?  The LORD is the stronghold of my life of whom shall I be afraid?

Psalm 46:1 - God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

Thanks soo much for taking a moment to read my post today.  Today has been a really stressful day & in writing this post I'm again reminded of how much Jesus loves each of us.  What a promise that is (:

Resting In Jesus' Love,
Stacey

What Has You Stressed Poll By Gary Smalley

http://smalley.cc/what-has-you-stressed

What has you stressed?

Stress causes many of our sicknesses! Stress is the “gap” between what you expect and what you are getting with each expectation from all of life. Your assignment today: write down your main expectations of self, others, money, work, etc. Then, write down from 0 to 10 how close or far you are from the expectation. Your stress level is the gap. If you have a lot of big gaps, you are one stressed out person.
So what has you stressed out?
